Carol, who has lost her vision in one eye and is experiencing vision loss in the other, has experienced several falls in her home within a short period of time. To assist her at home with her vision loss and help with her safety and security, the I C C program provided her with a portable digital magnifier and a smart lock for her home.

The portable magnifier has been helpful for Carol in household tasks such as reading prescriptions, bills, and other mail. The reason a smart lock was a good option for Carol is that, although she could call for emergency help through her medical alert system, she would not be able to unlock her door, and emergency services would then be forced to damage the door to gain entry. Before her smart lock, she would often leave her door unlocked, leaving her prone to burglary or intruders. Now, she can keep her door locked, and if she has an emergency, the local emergency services have an easier way to get inside without damaging Carol’s home.
